Shaftesbury Town Council to recruit Town Crier

Applications are now being welcomed for this honorary position, which continues a proud tradition of public proclamation and community celebration.

With a history rooted in royal courts and medieval markets, the role of Town Crier remains a valued part of British heritage. In Shaftesbury, the Crier plays a vital part in civic life, reading proclamations, opening events, and embodying the character and history of the town with pride and ceremony.

The successful applicant will wear full traditional livery, ring the ceremonial bell, and open public announcements with the time-honoured cry, “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” This is followed by news or proclamation, and concluded with the rousing words, “God save the King; May Shaftesbury Flourish!”

“This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about the town, confident in public, and keen to take part in civic traditions that bring our community together,” said Cllr Virginia Edwyn-Jones, Mayor of Shaftesbury. “The Town Crier represents not just the voice of the town, but its spirit.”

The post is honorary, with a modest annual honorarium of £300 and pre-agreed expenses covered. Full ceremonial uniform will be provided by the Town Council, and membership to the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers will be funded as part of the role. Duties include attending town events, making public announcements, and supporting civic ceremonies throughout the year.

Applicants should be comfortable speaking clearly in public, be personable and reliable, and have a genuine interest in local history and tradition. Previous experience in public speaking or performance is welcomed but not essential.

Applications close on Wednesday 23rd July. Further information can be found on the Town Council's website USING THIS LINK.
