Poppy Display Grows Due to Community Support

Chickerell Town Council has extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this year's Community Remembrance Poppy Display.

The council reached out to residents, community groups and local organisations through the appeal, Help Our Remembrance Poppy Display Grow for 2026, and the response was excellent with many poppies knitted, crocheted, crafted or donated poppies, with Chickerell's Women's Institute donating a large box of crafted poppies for the display at Willowbed Hall. Donations are still warmly welcomed to help the display grow even further for future Remembrance commemorations.

The display also represents a considerable amount of work by council staff, who have supported the project throughout the year. From creating poppies themselves and welcoming donations to sorting, preparing and fixing each individual poppy into place. In particular, the Town Clerk and Deputy Town Clerk have carefully incorporated every donated poppy into the display, ensuring that each contribution is represented. Nicola Briar, Town Clerk, said "Seeing the display grow this year is truly special. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated poppies, helping us create a fitting and meaningful tribute that honours those who served while bringing our community together in remembrance. It is a lovely reflection of the kindness, creativity and community spirit we have here in Chickerell”.

The council is currently erecting its annual lamppost poppy display along Putton Lane and Glennie Way. Like the main display, this tribute continues to grow each year and has become an important part of Chickerell's Remembrance commemorations. This year's arrangement places a particular focus on strengthening the connection to the First World War memorial plaque at the former Mission Chapel on Putton Lane, Charlestown, helping to highlight an important part of Chickerell's wartime heritage and ensuring those remembered there remain linked to the wider community commemorations.
